ToggleWhy We Call It Shivling Waterfall
Let me share something special about this place – something that makes it more than just another waterfall. We locals also call it Shivling Waterfall, and there’s a beautiful reason why. At the base of the falls, there’s a natural stone that resembles a Shivling (the sacred symbol of Lord Shiva). When the crystal-clear water fall over this stone, it creates a mesmerizing sight that looks just like milk being poured over a Shivling. if feels like nature’s own Abhishek ( Hindu ritual ), happening continuously in this hidden corner of Goa in pali valpoi. During monsoons, when the water flow is at its peak, this sight becomes even more divine – it’s as if nature itself is performing a sacred ritual.
Beyond the Postcard Perfect Beaches
I like beaches as much as anyone else . But there’s something magical about these waterfalls, where the real heart of Goa beats in rhythm with nature. Pali Waterfall, or as we locals often call it, Shivling Waterfall, is that special place where you can experience the Goa that most visitors never see.
Getting Here: A Local’s Guide to Transport

Now, here’s what the tourist guides won’t tell you – skip the expensive airport taxis and book a taxi through Goa Miles ( App Based Taxi service in goa ) You will not find Ola , Uber in goa.
Coming by train? Kulem Railway Station is your stop, about 40 kilometers away. It’s not the most obvious route, but it’s a journey through the real Goa, passing through villages and landscapes that tourists rarely see.
Pro tip – Prefer renting a Cab (Self drive cars) or Hire a local taxi, It would be tough reaching this waterfall by public transport. But still if you want to travel by public transport here is how you can reach valpoi .

The Trek Pali Waterfalls Begins
Let me tell you something – getting to Pali isn’t as straightforward as hopping into a taxi to Baga Beach, and that’s exactly what makes it special. The 60-90 minute trek from Valpoi village is like a journey through my childhood memories. Every time I guide friends here, I’m reminded of countless monsoon adventures with my cousins, scrambling over the same rocks and holding onto the same tree branches.
The trail might seem challenging with its vertical climbs and slippery rocks, but trust me, every drop of sweat is worth it. And here’s a local tip – bring those old sneakers you don’t mind getting muddy. We Goans know the monsoon path can get quite playful!
Timing Is Everything
While the so call influencers in their vlog will tell you it’s open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily, the real magic happens in the early morning hours. Reach Valpoi by 7:30 AM, and you’ll catch the morning light filtering through the mist as it dances around the cascade. During monsoon season (June to August), the waterfall transforms into something straight out of a dream.
The Hidden Treasures Along the Way
Here’s something you won’t find in your guidebook – about halfway through the trek, look out for a small clearing on your right. During the season, you’ll find wild berries we call “chunna” growing there. They’re nature’s little energy boosters for the trek ahead!
More Than Just a Waterfall
You see, Pali isn’t just about the waterfall. It’s connected to the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, and if you’re lucky (and quiet enough), you might spot some of our colorful resident birds. carry a camera you might sport Malabar Pied Hornbill or a Blue-tailed Bee-eater.

- Bring some local snacks (try stopping at the small shop in Valpoi for Dodol or bebinca ).
A Final Word from a Local Friend
Pali Waterfall is not just another tourist waterfall, it’s a part of our heritage, real Goa that lives beyond the beach shacks and alcohol. When you visit, take a moment to sit on one of the rocks, close your eyes, and just listen to the sound of the flowing water, the chorus of birds, and the rustle of leaves in the wind – this is the Goa we grew up with, and this is the Goa I want to share with you.
Remember to respect this sacred space as we locals do. And who knows? Maybe next time you’re here, you’ll run into me on one of my morning photography adventures, and I can show you even more of our hidden paradise!
Susegad , Dev Bare karu and happy exploring!
